New Wairoa Health Manager Appointed

Hawke’s Bay District Health Board is pleased to announce the promotion of Wairoa Health’s Clinical Nurse Manager, Sonya Smith, into the role of Wairoa Health Manager - a one year secondment placement to 23 July 2019.

Acting service director - Communities, Women and Children Directorate, Wietske Cloo, said the DHB was delighted to appoint Miss Smith to the role, which was advertised internally to support local leadership development.

The vacancy became available following the departure of former manager Te Pare Meihana who accepted a new role in Wellington for Capital & Coast District Health Board.

“Sonya is a local leader and has held a number of roles in our organisation, which will assist her in this management role.

“Her appointment will be a seamless transition for staff and Wairoa’s wider health provider community, thanks to her knowledge-base and existing relationships.”

A registered nurse for 25 years, Miss Smith was born and bred in Wairoa and has worked with the DHB at Wairoa Health for 10 years.

She lives with her partner Martin, who farms in Wairoa, and she has three daughters – two who are school aged.

“I love living and working in Wairoa- so when the opportunity came up to apply for this role, it seemed like a natural progression. I wanted to see the continuation and completion of projects already underway, and I look forward to continuing to serve Wairoa’s health needs,” said Miss Smith.
