Hawke's Bay District Health Board has received another generous cheque from Countdown following a successful 2019 Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal fundraiser.
The annual appeal raised over $1-million nationally - the money distributed across 20 district health boards.
A cheque presentation was held on Tuesday 10 December at Napier’s Countdown Carlyle store where it was announced Hawke's Bay DHB had been gifted $42,675 towards this year's wish list, with the following items now able to be purchased:
- A diabetes blood test analyser
- Pulse Oximeter
- Hearing Aid Restoration Instrument
- Three neonatal airway management tools and a CAFS recorder
Countdown Group Manager, Wayne Dohmen, said that since the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal began in 2007, our DHB alone had benefitted to the tune of $908,344 - the supermarket chain nationally raising $14.5 million towards helping hospitals better support sick kids.
"These fundraising drives are all about helping you to improve your services to enable you to do an even better job of caring for the sick children in our community, and over the years we have achieved so much together," said Mr Dohmen.
"You've supported this appeal with real dedication and we've formed strong partnerships for the greater good of our community.
"We are so proud of what we've been able to achieve together for our local community here in Hawke's Bay and our Countdown colleagues appreciate all that you do, not only for the appeal, but the work you do each day to help our children in need," he said.
Hawke’s Bay DHB Service Director Communities, Women and Children Directorate, Claire Caddie, and Medical Head of Department, Dr Kai Steinmann, thanked Countdown for its ongoing support and what it meant to the DHB to receive generous donations towards equipment over the years.
From next year, Countdown has announced it will change its fundraising focus away from the hospital-based appeal and instead turn its attention toward children's health, with a focus on food.
"As a food business, we are turning our focus toward contributing to our communities in a way that connects with what we do best, whilst continuing to make a meaningful impact on the health of Kiwi kids," said Mr Dohmen.
"Food is a human right and it's critical for good health. Over the last few years Countdown has developed a deeper appreciation for our role in feeding and supporting our communities, and particularly, New Zealander's in need.
"Our commitment to supporting the health of New Zealand children has therefore not changed and we look forward to continuing our relationships between countdown staff and our friends at Hawke's Bay DHB, although in a slightly different way."
