About Ngā Rau Rākau
Ngā Rau Rākau provides psychiatric assessment and acute care for adults in the Hawkes Bay Te Matau a Māui community.
Ngā Rau Rākau, the 23 bed Intensive Inpatient Unit, was built in 2016 and provides support and care for adults affected by acute mental illness and / or addiction disorders with both day programmes and inpatient hospital care.
The name Ngā Rau Rākau means 'a collection of trees'. By standing together, as part of the forest, Ngā Rau Rākau, the trees are protected, they are sheltered, they grow healthier, they grow stronger, they are supported and safe.
The hospital is made up of 3 wings :-
- Kahikatea – 6-8 beds
- Kowhai – 10-14 beds
- Pukatea – 3-5 beds - for those who need a secure environment while they are unwell.
The unit is light, modern, as homely as possible and includes a gym to help people to get, or remain, active.
Ngā Rau Rākau is an open ward; however there are times when the ward may be locked. When the doors are locked and you wish to enter or leave, please talk to the staff.
Visiting
Visitors are welcome between 1:00PM and 8:00PM.
We have a whānau room which can be used as a meeting space. Please talk to Reception Staff if you would like to use it.
If the main doors are closed please contact reception using the intercom to the right of the main entrance.
Visitor Parking
There are parking spaces reserved for Ngā Rau Rākau visitors at the back of the building, on the left hand side.
If your whānau / family member is staying in Ngā Rau Rākau for more than 21 days, you can get one free parking permit that can be used whilst they remian in hospital. Ask at Reception for more information.
Visitor Bags
Visitors to Pukatea wing need to put their belongings in lockers whilst they are on the ward. A staff member will help you find the lockers.
