Wairoa Maternity Unit is a small rural birthing and postnatal facility that is located within Wairoa Hospital. The facility accommodates labour, birth and postnatal inpatient stay within its three combined birthing and postnatal rooms. Antenatal clinics occur in the newly integrated family health centre within the Wairoa Hospital building.
The Wairoa Maternity Team has four caseloading midwives providing midwifery care to approximately 120 women a year across the pregnancy, intrapartum and postpartum continuum. The team share on call to be available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
You have a choice of where to have your baby:
- home
- Wairoa Maternity Unit
- Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hospital – birthing your baby in Hastings is usually recommended for those of you experiencing health concerns with your pregnancy, either for yourself or your baby, or both.
Please discuss with your midwife where would be best to have your baby.
If you need to see a specialist during your pregnancy there is a clinic held in Wairoa once a month and/or you may be asked to come to Hastings' Te Kākano clinic. You will be advised to see a doctor during your pregnancy if your midwife is concerned for your health or the health of your baby. It is important that you keep these appointments to ensure that everything is going ok for you and your baby. The doctor will work with you, your whānau and your midwife.
