Some delays expected when DHB psychologists strike

Hawke’s Bay District Health Board (HBDHB), together with all DHBs, has received strike notice from DHB psychologists, who are members of APEX – the union for health professionals.

District health board psychologists have voted not to participate in group work with patients or accept new patients during the strike period between 0800 Tuesday 3 September and 0800 Tuesday 1 October 2019.

Hawke’s Bay DHB Executive Director Provider Services, John Burns, said contingency planning was in place to ensure new patient cases were well managed and group work covered. However, some delays (such as longer wait times) could be expected by consumers across its non-urgent services.

Urgent Mental Health care would not be affected and will continue to be provided by Emergency Mental Health Services.

What you need to know:

• Industrial action by APEX union Psychologists begins at 8am Tuesday 3 September and concludes at 8am, Tuesday 1 October 2019.

• This is not a full withdrawal of labour.

• During this period, Psychologists who are APEX union members and choose industrial action will not participate in group work with patients or accept new patients.

• There may be some delays for consumers across non-urgent services. If you are a patient, please come to your scheduled appointment unless we have contacted you directly to say your appointment is being rescheduled.

• Contingency plans are in place.  If you need care, we are here.
