Hospital’s youngest patients ready to enjoy new playground

Exciting news for Hawke’s Bay Hospital’s youngest patients – the hospital’s paediatric playground, which is part of the Piki Te Ora Early Childhood Centre, has received a radical transformation!

With the help of local landscape designers, Espaso Verde, and Leanne Sanderson from The Nest Early Childhood Centre, Hawke’s Bay District Health Board’s (HBDHB) Piki Te Ora hospital play specialists have been able to create a relaxing and welcoming environment with a variety of spaces that offer natural play materials and exploration, as well as shaded relaxation areas.

Claire Caddie, service director of HBDHB’s Communities, Women and Children’s Directorate, said the project had been in the pipeline for a number of years and was finally a reality thanks to the accumulation of funding received by the Ministry of Education, backed by a dedicated project team. Ms Caddie said that this was one of the easiest projects to support with Racheal Hall, hospital play specialist, and Hannah Wilson, facilities co‑managing the project.

Construction to revamp the playground began in August and the official opening is to be held on site tomorrow, 8 November, at 9:30am.

The playground’s new design includes the introduction of various natural play materials offering a variety of possibilities for exploring, planning, reasoning, relaxation and learning so that children developed confidence.

Media are invited to join this transformational opening event.
