An inquiry-based unit plan that aims to investigate the foods that provide the best type of ‘fuel’ for our bodies using athletes as role models.
This unit provides links to reading, writing and mathematics standards and Te Reo.

The overall objective of the Nestlé Healthy Active Kids programme is to raise nutrition and health knowledge and promote physical activity with school-age children around the world. In New Zealand, we partner with AUT Millennium and the NZ Nutrition Foundation to support the development of free teachers resources, designed for teachers in partnership with teachers at School Kit, to inspire healthy and active kids through cross-curricular enquiry-based learning modules that are innovative and informative.

This online version of the book supports the implementation of Health and Physical Education in the New Zealand Curriculum (1999) by providing teachers with ideas for planning units of work to meet the identified learning needs of their students. Although the learning experiences present a teaching sequence, teachers are not expected to implement all the suggested activities or necessarily to follow the sequence suggested. To meet the learning needs of their students, teachers may use all or part of this book over a two-year cycle and may also select from activities designed for other year levels.

Underneath our skin are lots of things that make up our body. Two of these are bones and muscles. Bones shape our body and help us to stand up straight. Muscles are attached to bones; they help us walk and run and smile.

All the bones in our body make up our skeleton – from the top of our skull to the tips of the phalanges at the end of our toes. Muscles stretch across our bones and are attached with tendons. We use both our muscles and our skeleton to stand, write and even turn the pages when we’re reading a book.
